Tiruvoṟṟiyūr, India

Fieldnotes — August 2019

The Thyagaraja Temple of Tiruvottiyur is dedicated to Shiva and appeared in the Tevaram hymns of Saiva Nayanars (7th c. CE) as one of the Paadal Petra Sthalam.
Built during the Pallavas Reign, it was expanded and rebuilt by Rajendra Chola I (at the beginning of the 11th c. CE).

Several inscriptions chronicle sacrifices and goods owned by the temple (burning lamps, ilavilaku, bronze statues, etc.).
