Archaeological site and Information Centre of Arikamedu, India

The archaeological site of Arikamedu is located 6 kms south of Pondicherry. It was an estuary harbour settled on the right bank of the Ariyankuppam river. Open on the Bay of Bengal, the ancient port was involved in the Indo-roman trade between the 3rd c. BCE to the 3rd c. CE.

The Department of Tourism, Government of Puducherry (India) decided to set up an ambitious project of creation of a Centre of Information with the aim to inform the local and international public on the history of the archaeological exploration of the site of Arikamedu. The EFEO coordinates and produces the scientific content of the Centre. Dominic Goodall (Responsible of the EFEO Centre in Pondicherry) and Coline Lefrancq (post-doctoral researcher at the CNRS, Paris) coordinate the scientific side.
